A home product photography setup: a phone and simple lighting

A small home corner can produce useful product images when light is consistent, the item is clear and information is truthful. The aim is to explain size, contents, materials and use, not merely imitate a luxury advertisement. Start with one product and the questions its pictures should answer. Buy equipment when you understand the problem it solves rather than treating a long equipment list as proof that your phone cannot produce useful photographs.

Build a repeatable corner

Choose a surface near a window with soft side lighting rather than harsh direct sun. Use a simple background and a white board opposite the window if shadows conceal details. Try moving the object before adding another light. Keep paper and fabric away from hot equipment; do not improvise a flammable cover over a lamp.

Mark phone, product and reflector positions and photograph the complete arrangement. This helps reproduce conditions for another colour. Avoid mixing unrelated lamps with daylight without checking colour. A significant lighting change justifies repeating comparison shots, particularly when colour drives selection. Repeatability matters more than making the setup look impressive to someone watching you work.

Set the phone for clarity

Clean the lens, stabilise the device and use a timer to avoid movement. Focus on the relevant part and check that bright areas retain detail. An extremely wide view can distort proportions. Step back and crop reasonably instead of moving so close that edges and shape become unrealistic.

Where available, lock exposure and white balance after testing for a consistent series. Nikon’s white-balance explanation provides context about colour rendering. Apply the principle by comparing the picture with the actual item, rather than copying one setting to every phone. Disable smoothing and filters that hide texture or a significant defect.

Plan the shots before starting

Put it into practice

Get started

Prepare a complete main view, a useful side or back, material or fastening detail, separated contents, an in-use scene and a size reference. Each picture should do a different job. Open a set and show what is actually included. Explain decorative accessories that are not supplied. For installation products, connectors and included parts may answer more important questions than an attractive scene with unclear compatibility.

Clean lens, consistent light, details, size reference and mobile review

The diagram summarises basics; the shot list and checks adapt them to your product. A main picture need not carry every word and number. The page can explain information that would become unreadable when squeezed into a small image.

A sample session and budget

Assume a background costs 12 TND, a reflector board 8 TND and a support 25 TND, totalling 45 TND with a phone already owned. These are fictional costs, not market prices or compulsory purchases. Borrowing the support reduces spending to 20 TND in the example. Buy according to stability and time saved rather than the appearance of the studio corner.

For an organiser hypothetically selling at 38 TND, prepare six views: complete shape, base, dimensions, compartments, contents and use with any unprovided props identified. A trial schedule of ten minutes preparation, fifteen shooting and ten reviewing is a working plan, not a speed benchmark. Retake an unreadable measurement rather than publishing it and answering the same question repeatedly.

Edit without changing the product

Correct tilt, crop and brightness moderately and compare before with after. Do not turn a metallic finish into gold, add an accessory or redraw stitching. Preserve originals and product and colour references. If an AI tool changes a background, inspect edges, shadows and contents. An altered item should not be described as an accurate photograph of what customers will receive.

Google Merchant Center image guidance emphasises correspondence with the offered variant. Review current feed requirements separately if using one. A promotional graphic may not suit the main image expected by that channel. Following guidance is not a guarantee of acceptance or visibility.

Review inside the actual page

Add pictures to the product and inspect order, size and readability on another phone. You can organise product pictures and information with Matjri. Ask someone to identify contents and dimensions without assistance. If they misunderstand, improve the relevant shot or explanation before adding another similar photograph.

Must every picture have a white background?

Not across all channels and uses. Choose a background that explains the item and check the destination’s requirements. An in-use scene can complement a simple main view without replacing it everywhere.

Should all colours appear together?

A comparison can help, but shoppers also need to see their selected version. Prepare separate views when colours or details differ instead of showing another version without explanation.

When should I hire a photographer?

When reflection, colour or precision remains problematic after simple tests, or your time costs more than suitable help. Start with six planned views for one product, then assess the result before buying new equipment.
