Packing fragile products: a practical guide before your first shipment

Good packaging protects a product during handling; it is more than attractive presentation or a fragile sticker. Before the first shipment, check whether the item moves, touches another component or presses against a weak part of the box. Adapt the solution to the product, weight and transport method, then document a repeatable packing process. No single protective layer suits everything, and an informal home test cannot guarantee every journey.

Identify the product’s vulnerable points

Inspect edges, handles, protruding sections, lids, glass and detachable components. Is pressure, friction or internal movement the main concern? Does the item contain liquid, a battery or material requiring specific carrier acceptance? A strong carton does not replace approval of restricted contents. Confirm acceptance and relevant conditions before purchasing stock you plan to ship.

Prepare a short product card showing weight, dimensions, separate pieces, opening direction and parts that must not bear pressure. A picture of the intact item helps the team, but training images do not need to include customer names or contact details.

Design the inner protection and outer container together

The goal is stable contents without direct contact between fragile pieces, inside a box appropriate for their weight. The DHL glass-shipping guide provides principles to examine before checking your local carrier’s requirements. Advice for one type of object is not a universal packing specification.

Try suitable dividers for multiple pieces instead of placing everything in one bag. Fill empty space without applying damaging pressure. A larger carton is not automatically safer if the item can move, and its size may change the shipping category. Measure the sealed parcel rather than the manufacturer’s retail box alone.

Build a prototype and review it safely

Put it into practice

Try these steps in your own store.

Start on Matjri and work through the steps at your own pace.

Get started

Use the materials you will actually use for orders, not an ideal sample that is too difficult to reproduce. Check the closure, restraint and integrity of the carton under ordinary handling. Do not deliberately break glass near people or test electrical products against manufacturer instructions. Sensitive or high-value goods may need a competent professional assessment.

  1. Weigh the item and materials, then measure the closed parcel.
  2. Check that components cannot strike each other.
  3. Inspect the supports and closure.
  4. Photograph the selected packing version.
  5. Review a small real shipment group before expanding.

Ask the carrier about limitations in advance. A warning sticker neither replaces protection nor proves entitlement to compensation. The official Navex support information illustrates the type of contact to find with your own operator when an incident occurs.

A TND example: evaluate the additional cost

A fictional shop compares packing costing 1.2 TND with an alternative costing 2.1 TND per parcel. The extra 0.9 TND totals 18 TND across twenty dispatches. If replacing one damaged item costs 30 TND and sending it again costs 6 TND, one incident costs 36 TND before handling time. These invented figures explain the calculation rather than describe market prices.

This does not establish that the more expensive package saves money. It might fail to address the cause or increase dimensions and shipping charges. Compare materials, delivery costs and damage actually observed. Do not record hypothetical prevented incidents as realised earnings. When evidence remains limited, state what information is missing instead of promising a protection rate.

Build my storefront

Organise packing supplies so an exhausted material is not silently replaced by an inadequate substitute. Recheck the recipe when the supplier or product shape changes. The same commercial name does not establish identical dimensions or edge strength across batches.

Link damage to the order and packing version

Matjri product and order tools can help organise shipment references; retain the packing card and photos in your operational records. Do not assume an automatic report will explain every breakage. Record observations rather than guesses: a compressed corner, contact between pieces or a defect already visible before shipping.

When a customer reports damage, request useful photographs without exposing them to broken glass or unnecessary handling. Keep damaged merchandise separate from saleable stock. Review several cases for a common product, material or preparation issue, then adjust the element supported by evidence rather than replacing the entire process at once.

Questions before approving the package

Is the manufacturer’s box enough?

Not necessarily. It may be intended for display or storage inside a larger shipping case. Examine its purpose, condition and the carrier’s requirements; attractive presentation does not prove transport protection.

Can I rely on a fragile sticker?

Use a warning where appropriate, but restraint, closure and protection remain essential. A sticker is not a guarantee and does not override content acceptance or claim conditions.

What is the next practical step?

Select one fragile product and write a repeatable packing card. Calculate materials for twenty hypothetical parcels, then review the first small real group before buying supplies in bulk.
