fbp, fbc and fbclid: why some store visits have no click identifier

Not every visit to your store needs to contain a click identifier. Before treating missing fbc as a fault, distinguish a browser identifier, the provenance of a click and the labels you add to a campaign URL yourself. These serve different purposes. None proves on its own that an advertisement produced an order. A Tunisian shop receiving visitors from Facebook, Google, WhatsApp and direct navigation should expect different information to be available along different journeys.

Three names with different jobs

fbclid is a value that may appear in a URL coming from Meta. fbc preserves valid click information in a form used by the integration, while fbp concerns a browser identifier. Rather than memorizing the names, ask where a value first appeared and whether it followed the same visit through to an order. A browser identifier is not your customer’s telephone number and does not, by itself, establish a person’s identity in your order records.

ElementPractical question
fbclidDid the incoming URL contain genuine click information?
fbcWas available click information retained?
fbpWas a browser identifier available in this context?
UTMHow did we label the source and campaign?

UTM parameters organize your links. They do not replace a click identifier. Writing utm_source=facebook does not authenticate an interaction with Meta or create information that was never collected. A useful naming convention and genuine click provenance can coexist, but they answer different questions.

Organic Meta links can also contain click information

The rule “paid advertisement has fbc, organic traffic never has fbc” is too simplistic. Some organic Facebook or Instagram links can carry fbclid. A person typing your address directly or arriving through an ordinary search may not bring that information. Browsing context, cookies and redirects can also affect availability. A low percentage alone therefore cannot establish that the connection is broken, and complete coverage should not be promised for every traffic source.

Create my store

Matjri’s current integration attempts to retain genuine click information present in the visit URL. It does not manufacture a Click ID for every visitor. Keep that distinction in mind when examining a journey between a store address and a custom domain. Your aim is to understand what happened, rather than fill an empty diagnostic field artificially.

Run a safe test without changing code

  1. Write down the source you want to examine, such as a publication link, a search visit or direct navigation.
  2. Open the link as a customer would and check the product page it reaches.
  3. Identify the final domain and any unexpected redirection before the order starts.
  4. Complete a clearly identifiable test operation and compare its time and product with the available events.
  5. Keep the findings without publishing identifiers or personal customer details in open screenshots.

A technical team can inspect the transfer of information from the visit URL into the order context. It should not copy one customer’s identifier into another customer’s event. A synthetic identifier may belong in a controlled technical test, but success with that value cannot demonstrate how every real customer journey behaves.

Prepare a clear product page and ordering path in Matjri, then test the domain customers actually use. A separate preview address can represent a different environment and may not answer the question about your published shop.

A fictional percentage example

Imagine one hundred visits: fifty from search or direct navigation, thirty from Meta links carrying a valid click identifier, and twenty from other messages or links. Finding fbc in thirty visits gives an overall 30% rate. That does not automatically mean 70% of Meta clicks were lost. The denominator includes journeys that were never expected to contain that identifier. Next week, the percentage could change merely because the mix of traffic sources changed.

Now suppose those visits produce ten orders of 55 TND each, making 550 TND in order value. You cannot automatically attribute all 550 TND to the thirty identified visits. Actual operations must be connected using the available evidence and the limits of attribution tools. Having a click identifier also does not establish that an order was delivered or its payment collected.

Organize links without putting personal information inside them

Use straightforward source and campaign names, and maintain a small naming sheet your team understands. Never put a telephone number, postal address or private receipt token into UTM parameters. Links can be forwarded and recorded by different services. Avoid renaming a campaign every day when you intend to compare a whole week. Differences in capitalization or spelling can split results in tools that interpret those values as distinct labels.

When you find unexplained missing information, describe one concrete case: link origin, final page, operation time and expected field. That evidence is more useful than saying the score is low. Start with one consistent product link and organize its orders in a Matjri store, keeping commercial order status separate from visit diagnostics.

Frequently asked questions

Should I copy one fbclid onto every store link?

No. It belongs to genuine click provenance, not to a permanent campaign label. Use UTM for your naming convention and keep real click identifiers attached to their own journeys without inventing or redistributing them between customers.

Are fbp and fbc hashed telephone numbers?

No. They are distinct from telephone and email fields. Do not treat them as identity verification in order management, publish their values on public pages or confuse their presence with evidence that a parcel was delivered.

Could the percentage fall when Google visits increase?

Yes. A change in source mix can reduce the proportion of visits carrying a Meta click identifier. Review the denominator, source and period before judging the connection. A lower percentage alone cannot identify a particular technical fault.
