Local wholesale or importing into Tunisia: calculate cost delivered to stock

Compare local purchasing and importing using the cost of usable goods received into your stock, not the price shown in a foreign catalogue. Include transport, documentation, handling and product-specific expenses, then examine lead time, cash exposure and defect resolution. There is no single customs rate for all products. A small commercial purchase does not automatically become a personal parcel. Verify the applicable procedures before committing money.

Make sure the goods are comparable

Fix material, dimensions, quality, components, packaging and agreed warranty conditions. Local supply may have a higher unit price while offering faster availability or direct inspection; importing may provide specifications unavailable locally. Neither conclusion should be assumed. Use a sample or technical description to avoid comparing different products with similar names.

Define minimum quantities and option mix as well. Fifty units distributed according to demand are not equivalent to fifty units of one unwanted colour. Compare a saleable batch rather than the theoretical number of pieces offered.

Understand where the supplier’s quotation ends

Is the offer at the factory, inclusive of transport to a named location, or bundled with other services? Identify who arranges and pays for transport, insurance and paperwork. Commercial terms can allocate tasks, costs and delivery risks; refer to the official ICC Incoterms information. A three-letter term does not automatically include every formality or tax.

Specify the location, edition and conditions when using a trade term, seeking competent assistance if unclear. If a message simply says shipping included, ask where that service ends and which exclusions apply. Do not build a funding decision on an unspoken interpretation.

Check classification and procedures before paying

Your next step

Have a clear idea? Give it a store.

Present your products and manage orders in one place.

Create my store

The official Tunisian Customs tariff and nomenclature service helps identify requirements associated with classification. Estimates depend on accurate inputs. Do not select a nearby category merely because its duty appears lower. Prepare the correct technical description and obtain suitable assistance where needed.

Required paperwork can depend on the product. Consult the Ministry of Commerce technical import-control information where relevant. An invoice alone does not establish that all formalities are complete. Avoid promising customers a fixed arrival date unsupported by documentation readiness and the transport process.

Keep a cost calculation and a cash timetable

Create columns for goods, transport, insurance, intermediaries, handling, local delivery and documented charges. Retain foreign-currency amounts and the conversion actually paid. Check whether a service already included in freight has been added again as a separate cost.

Some payments may receive different accounting or tax treatment depending on the business. Confirm that before treating everything as a final cost or assuming it is recoverable. Even a payment accounted for differently later may require funding now. Your cash timetable shows when money is needed; your unit-cost calculation explains what has been allocated to stock.

A teaching example: lower purchase price, higher received cost

A fictional local offer supplies fifty units at 25 TND plus 50 TND transport. Total cost is 50 × 25 + 50 = 1,300 TND, or 26 TND per unit. An import offer for identical specifications has an illustrative converted price of 18 TND each, totalling 900 TND. Add 150 TND international transport, 250 TND hypothetical additional expenses and 50 TND local transport: total 1,350 TND.

Put it into practice

Try these steps in your own store.

The 250 TND is not a customs estimate or tax rate. All figures are invented to demonstrate the calculation. If two imported units remain unusable without compensation, 1,350 ÷ 48 gives approximately 28.125 TND per usable unit. Update later when a replacement or credit actually occurs rather than assuming it upfront.

Choose using more than the purchase price

  1. Identify missing landed-cost items.
  2. Calculate cash required before the first sale.
  3. Estimate timing with uncertainty visible.
  4. Review shortages, defects and repeat supply.
  5. Choose a trial that leaves operating reserves.

Matjri catalogue and order tools can organise products, purchase prices and sales. Keep import evidence and cost workings in a suitable record. Do not assume the platform determines a customs classification or automatically calculates every legal charge applicable to your goods.

A sensible choice might be local testing followed by a new comparison once demand is demonstrated. Importing may also be justified by specifications and quantity. Record why you chose the route and which new information would cause a review, rather than turning one purchase into a permanent rule.

Questions before committing

Is a small shipment automatically exempt?

Do not assume this for commercial purchases. Check the regime, product and transaction rather than applying a personal allowance or an exception heard in another context.

Should every payment be added to product cost?

Retain every amount, then confirm accounting and tax classification with a competent adviser. Unit cost and cash requirements are different, and later treatment does not remove an immediate funding need.

What should I obtain before a deposit?

A confirmed technical description, clear service boundaries, documented cost assumptions and procedure checks. Where a major amount remains unknown, show that uncertainty instead of reporting a falsely precise total.
